The Undying Covenant

When you, Dear Reader, answer the Call to Adventure and set out on your own heroic journey you are, although you don’t know it at the time, being obligated into The Undying Covenant. The monomyth does not begin with “once upon a time” and conclude with “and they lived happily ever after; it is a universal, cyclical epic that encompasses your entire life and refuses to let you go until you shuffle off this mortal coil. In short, the monomyth is called the MONOmyth, for it is one never-ending story that we all have a hand in writing: Many lines, woven together into one over-arching narrative.

Once you come to own your role as the hero of your own thread, you may start to see yourself as the main character in a film or a book. However, sometime after you have reached the Freedom to Live stage, you’ll begin to notice things that make you realize you’re actually the protagonist of a TV or video game series that the audience took a shine to, and now the studio, with dollar signs in their eyes, refuses to let it conclude no matter how many sharks it has to jump over.

As I said in my last blog, once the hero returns to his Ordinary World he does so in an elevated state and he thus raises his original environment along with himself by remedying the problems he set out to solve in the first place. Eventually, though, a new and greater problem will emerge, and the hero will be tasked with…
